Variables, terms, formulae, and identities

The applets are started by clicking the red buttons.

Recognize structures 1 is a puzzle in which the structure of algebraic terms shall be reckognized. No computation is necessary. One goal is to understand that recognizing structures mainly consists in an "appropriate way of looking" at things and in introducing appropriate abbreviations for parts of expressions. Trying to get along well with this exercise will pay off later on, as it supports getting acquainted with mathematical matters and facilitates a deeper understanding. The applet is started from the red button in its own window.

Recognize structures 2 is a puzzle in which the properties of terms shall be charavterized in words instead of symbols. As in the previous ecercise, no computation is necessary, but rather "the right way of looking". The applet is started from the red button in its own window.

Recognize structures 3 is a puzzle in which terms shall be characterized by statements in which numerical values play a role. No computation is necessary except for simple insertions. As the previous exercises, this applet may illustrate the importance of the distinction between "more important" and "less important" properties of mathematical expressions. It is started from the red button in its own window.
